At the height of the AIDS crises, I remember constantly hearing that the disease was killing the best and the brightest. While this was somewhat of an over-inflated slogan perpetuated by the homosexual leaning media, there were so many guys that I knew with extraordinary aptitudes for art, literature, music, dance, and design.
They were truly gifted by God. I believe that this is why the devil often singles-out gay men for an enormously severe form of temptation and torture. For as gay men, we have often endured a suffering not unlike the Saints.
From our earliest memories, we frequently harbor secretive pains of self-doubt rejection. Later, we continually direct ourselves towards the highest possible focal point of all — encompassing beauty and love.
Early on, the Blessed Saints recognize this as the image of God. Those who are corrupted and lose their way, find themselves in front of a very different deity. Their gifts are unwittingly squandered in his service, their life-force extracted in payment for a decaying feast of traitorous emptiness, then they are left to die alone and scared. I found this book enlightening, having no personal experience with the gay community at large.
Although he writes about the gay lifestyle in San Francisco in the 80s, he did not appear to be exclusively homosexual but also had sexual relationships with women, yet he never refers himself as Bisexual. Not that it matters because the true theme of the book was about the evils of pornography and how that became an entry point for demon possession. His description of promiscuous gay-sex dehumanizing men of that era and leading to satanic bondage reminded me of the classic book by Malachi Martin, "Hostage to the Devil".
It would be easy to dismiss his recollections as ancient history back in the 80s at the height of the AIDS scare but he writes about the struggles of gay men's search for love and wholeness in a very compelling way. A search that I think is still accurate today. For Jesus saved me from homosexuality who do not believe in a being called Satan, his account of demon possession will seem preposterous. But for those who do believe in Satan and acknowledge his tactics, this is a true cautionary tale.
I should also say that this is an unusual book because it is very openly Christian in its viewpoint but also chock full of sordid details of gay bathhouses and sex clubs.
I don't consider his writing gratuitous because Sciambra needed to accurately describe the lifestyle, but parents may not want to leave this book lying around. This is a challenging book, especially when the author gets into the details of the gay lifestyle. When I asked a friend who was in that lifestyle for about 10 years about this, he said that this description is typical of a certain segment of gays, enough to make this a good description.
But beyond that, the description of the descent into demonic practices and experiences adds a dimension which is often not recognized by many. The fact that the Catholic Church still has exorcists and that Pope Francis has spoken of their work, indicates it is a reality that people need to be aware of.
While those in the west may be skeptical Jesus saved me from homosexuality it, those in Africa in particular are quite aware of the work and power of demons. This book is likely not for everyone, but if you are working with people involved in the gay lifestyle, it is worth reading.
I did not know what to expect when I purchased this book. I bought it solely on the recommendation of someone I fully trust when it comes to choosing books worth reading. I find it difficult to write a review, because anything I say will sound trivial in comparison with the true depth of this work.
Perhaps I can summarize it this way: Joseph Sciambra went to the very depths of hell and back. The first part of the book describes that hell. Then something occurs suddenly, in a flash, and he begins to see his chosen lifestyle in a completely different light and becomes able to radically reshape his life.
His insights are luminous. We tend to use the word "enlightening" rather too casually. This book is enlightening in the truest sense of the word. It's a very troubling book and an eye-opener unless you Jesus saved me from homosexuality happen to know a lot about the intersection of gay sex clubs, pornography, violence, and the occult. The author tells his story modestly and without dramatization though the title and cover might, at first, make you doubt that!
The writing is fine and very readable, though with an occasional rare typo or usage mistake like "well-healed" for "well-heeled". Overall it's a sobering book, and an important one for people who want to know about the seamier side of gay culture. It won't sit well with apologists for that culture, nor for people hostile to religion. This book was the most heartbreaking, earth-shattering and brutally honest account of the effects of pornography and the homosexual lifestyle that one could ever read, I dare say.
Joseph Sciambra doesn't leave much to the imagination and with good reason. As I read, I realized that by revealing his own personal, harrowing journey, Joseph, wants the reader to truly grasp exactly what these twin malignant evils can do to the soul and just how far down they can drag a person This isn't a story written by a person who has a political agenda.
This is one person's real life experience and his personal encounter with Evil.
He lived it and has come out on the other side to tell his remarkable and heart-rending story. Young men who identify as gay would do well to heed the warnings set forth in this book. While some of this story seems too incredible to believe, based on my own experiences, I do regard it as a true story.
